SMCS Scholarships & Bursaries
The following is a list of scholarships and bursaries awarded by St. Michael’s Choir School at the end of each academic year.
THE STUDENT COUNCIL ACHIEVEMENT TROPHY
This award is given to a member on St. Michael's Choir Student Council who in the opinion of the President has shown superior effort in his duties during this school year. This student has played a greater role than required by his position on council. His contributions and commitment to school activities have been outstanding and recognition for his work is voiced by this trophy.
PRESIDENT’S GAVEL
The new elected President of the Student Council presents to this year's President an engraved gavel as a symbol of outstanding leadership, and in recognition of his generous service to the student body.
TORONTO SECONDARY UNIT (OECTA) GRADUATING STUDENT AWARD
This award is given to a student for demonstrating social and political responsibility, by participating in school or community activities that promote social justice and foster Catholic values. This Award has a cash value of $100.00
THE CATHOLIC EDUCATION FOUNDATION OF ONTARIO CATHOLIC STUDENT AWARD
The Catholic Education Foundation Catholic Student Award is awarded annually to the student whose involvement in school and community activities typifies the objectives of the Catholic school. The award is presented to a student actively involved in co-curricular activities, volunteer activities and leadership throughout the school and community.
TORONTO EAST ROTARY CLUB AWARD
Presented to a graduating student in recognition of academic achievement combined with community service. Rotary is an international club of professional and business people who give of their time and resources for community service. The recipient will attend a Rotary Club luncheon and receive a plaque and cheque for $250.00.
THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO NATIONAL BOOK AWARD
This is awarded to one student annually who demonstrates superior academic performance, original and creative thought and exception achievement in a broad context.
THE JOHN ARAB MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
John Arab “one of the finest tenor voices in Canada” joined St. Michael’s Choir School in 1954. John taught voice at the Choir School and was the vocal coach of the Tenor and Bass Choir. He exuded warmth and gentleness and a sense of humour. This scholarship is awarded to a faithful chorister in the senior high school who best represents in today’s world the values and qualities that Monsignor Ronan sought to build in every young man who attends St. Michael’s Choir School - faith and generous spirit. $400.00
ELVIRA DE MONTE SCHOLARSHIP
Mrs. De Monte served as a Trustee on the Separate School Board for twenty-three years. She strongly believed in Catholic Education and worked hard to establish schools throughout Metropolitan Toronto to service Catholic families. She was instrumental in the development of Cardinal Carter School of the Arts because she understood that a school which combines artistic talents and academic excellence would further enhance the spirit of the student. She believed in enhancing ones growth through music and drama and asked, before she passed away from Cancer, that a child from St. Michael's Choir School also receive a scholarship to continue in the traditions of the school. (This scholarship shall be awarded to grade 4, 5, or 6 students of St. Michael’s Choir School who are in good academic standing, with a consistent record of faithful, loyal and committed service to the Cathedral and to the music program.)
THE SEAN GARROW MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established by the Garrow family and friends in 1995. It honours the memory of Sean Garrow, son, chorister and athlete, who died tragically on August 27th, 1994. In his twelve short years of life, Sean gave much love and pleasure to those around him. His personality had an infectious quality of kindness and laughter that drew many people to him young and old. Sean was an academically gifted child, musically talented, and a natural athlete. This award will be made to a student who is returning to the Choir School in the following year, and will recognize his well-rounded excellence in every aspect of Choir School life, with particular emphasis on enthusiastic participation in school sports and athletics. This year the award has a value of $1,000.00 toward the annual Music School fees.
THE THOMAS J. McEWAN MEMORIAL AWARD
This award is presented in memory of Tom McEwan, teacher, inventor, steamboat builder and friend and mentor to the countless young men who have passed through his classroom. It is presented to the student with the highest academic mark in Physical Geography in Grade 11. It has a value of $300.
THE JOAN HOPPERTON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This Scholarship is awarded annually by the Parents' Auxiliary to the student in Grade 8 who best achieves academic excellence. It has a value of $1,500.00 toward the Grade 9 tuition fee.
HAROLD L. ARMSTRONG SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded from the late Ethel Armstrong who directed that the scholarship be in memory of her brother who was a charter member of the Choir School staff and organist of St. Michael's Cathedral for over 30 years. It is awarded annually to 2 boys in the High School for excellence in instrumental and theoretical music, provided they be faithful organ students and choristers. The amount of the Scholarship will be the annual income divided equally among the students. This year the student will receive $900.00 towards the annual music tuition fee.
THE FRANK GADZALA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship, in memory of the grandfather of the 1991 graduate, Matthew Warszawski, is awarded to a student in Gr. 10-12 with the highest academic average provided the student has maintained excellence in his musical studies and faithfulness in his choral duties. It has a value of $200.
THE VICTORIA SCHOLARS SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded to the Senior High School student who has not only excelled vocally, but who has also made an important contribution to the Choral programme. This scholarship is awarded by the Victoria Scholars under the direction of Dr. Jerzy Cichocki, to celebrate their winning of the prestigious Canada Council's Healey Willan Grand Prize for outstanding artistic merit in the 1996 CBC Amateur Choir Competition. It has a value of $500.00.
THE KEN KERRIGAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship, which was established by the 1977 graduating class in honour of their classmate who died tragically in an accident in 1982, is presented to the High School student who has not only excelled academically and musically, but who has also made an important contribution to the general life of the school. It has a value of $300.00
THE MONSIGNOR JOHN E RONAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This Scholarship is awarded to a student in Grade 7 or 8 for excellence as a Cathedral Chorister. It has a value of $1,500.00 toward the next year’s tuition fee.
THE AMBROZY CICHOCKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established by Mrs. Dyoniza Cichocki in memory of her husband, the father of Dr. Wladyslaw Cichocki and Dr. Jerzy Cichocki, a graduate of 1977. It is awarded to the High School student who has not only excelled academically and musically but who has also demonstrated a special interest in Sacred Music. It has a value of $500.00
IRON MAN SCHOLARSHIP (Dedicated to the Class of 1997)
This scholarship was established by Michael S. Capobianco to encourage participation and competition in St. Michael's Choir School sports. Physical fitness and sports play an important part in child development, so it is necessary to recognize those who participate in such activities. This award is given to an elementary level student who plays a significant role in sports within the school. In addition, this student has maintained a sensible academic average, as well as providing an example to his peers of accomplishing and achieving personal goals. This scholarship has a value of $300.00 toward next year's tuition fee.
THE CANADIAN MILLENNIUM SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION
The excellence awards recognize, support and encourage talented Canadians who make positive and significant contributions to the betterment of communities across the country, demonstrate capacity for leadership, and commit themselves to the pursuit of academic excellence and innovation. This award has a value of $4.800.
LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR’S COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER AWARD
The medal from the Lieutenant Governor is awarded to the student who has made an exemplary community contribution or outstanding achievement through volunteer activity. This year two recipients will be chosen due to the double cohort graduates.
GOVERNOR GENERAL’S AWARD
The bronze medal from the Governor General is awarded to the student who attains the highest academic average in the final year of High School.
